Maritime Buoyage System (IALA)

Understanding and interpreting maritime buoyage is the cornerstone of safe navigation. Whether in open water or entering ports and marinas, buoys serve as a "visual language" that guides skippers to deep water, warns of underwater obstructions, and indicates recommended sailing channels.

Mastering the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) system is more than a professional requirement; it is your "Safety Net," providing the peace of mind that you, your vessel, and your crew are guided safely along your route.

The IALA system consists of five categories of buoys:

1. Lateral Marks

Lateral marks define the edges of sailing channels (starboard - right and port- left sides) when entering or leaving ports, canals, or rivers.

The IALA Maritime Buoyage System divides the world into two geographical regions, A and B, to regulate the use of lateral marks. The fundamental difference between them lies in the reversal of red and green color roles when entering a port, river, or channel. In Region A, a green buoy marks the starboard side and a red buoy marks the port side. Conversely, in Region B, these roles are completely reversed; green is positioned on the port side and red on the starboard side when entering a harbor or channel. Understanding this distinction is critical for safe navigation, as it dictates the defined "sailing route" for each region globally.

Rules depend on the IALA region (A or B). The examples below refer to Region A (for Region B, the roles of red and green are reversed).

  • Starboard Hand Mark (Green):

Usually conical in shape. Marks the starboard side of the channel when entering a marina or canal. By night: Green light.

  • Port Hand Mark (Red):

Usually cylindrical/rectangular in shape. Marks the port side of the channel when entering a marina or canal. By night: Red light.

  • Channel Bifurcation (Preferred Channel):

Used where channels split.

The color of the top band determines the preferred route:

  • Top band Green: Follow the channel to the starboard side.
  • Top band Red: Follow the channel to the port side.

2. Cardinal Marks

Cardinal marks indicate the safe water area relative to an obstruction (such as a rock or shoal) based on the four cardinal directions. Each mark features specific topmarks (triangles), colors (black and yellow combinations), and light signals (white flashes).

3. Isolated Danger Mark

The Isolated Danger Mark is a buoy used to mark a specific, localized hazard (such as a rock, a wreck, or a small shoal) that has navigable water all around it.

Key Characteristics:

  • Purpose: It identifies a specific point of danger, alerting vessels that it is unsafe to approach the buoy closely.
  • Appearance: The mark is typically black with one or more broad horizontal red bands.
  • Topmark: It is distinguished by two black spheres, one stacked directly above the other.
  • Night Light: At night, it displays a flashing white light in a group of two flashes (indicating "two" for the two spheres).

Because this buoy sits directly over the danger, it serves as a clear warning to give that specific location a wide berth while navigating through otherwise safe waters.

4. Emergency Wreck Mark

The Marking Buoy (EWMB) is a specialized maritime aid introduced by the IALA to provide a clear, unambiguous, and immediate warning of a new, uncharted danger, such as a recently sunken vessel.

It is designed to be a temporary solution, typically deployed for the first 24 to 72 hours until the wreck is fully surveyed, charted in nautical publications, or marked with more permanent aids (such as cardinal or isolated danger marks). image.png

Key Characteristics:

  • Appearance: A pillar or spar buoy featuring vertical stripes of blue and yellow in equal dimensions (minimum of 4, maximum of 8 stripes).

  • Topmark: If fitted, it is a standing/upright yellow cross.

  • Night Light: It displays an alternating blue and yellow flashing light. The pattern consists of a 1-second blue flash followed by a 0.5-second eclipse, then a 1-second yellow flash and a 0.5-second eclipse (abbreviated as "OcAlBY").

  • Additional Aids: To enhance visibility and safety, these buoys may also be equipped with an AIS transponder and a Racon (transmitting the Morse code letter "D").

This distinct combination of blue and yellow is unique to this buoy; no other navigational mark in the IALA system uses the color blue or emits a blue light.

4. Safe Water Marks

The Safe Water Mark is used to indicate that there is safe water all around the mark. It is typically used as an approach point for a port or to mark the center of a sailing channel.

Key Characteristics:

  • Purpose: It serves as a guide to the entrance of a port or marks the middle of a navigable channel, ensuring safe passage on all sides.
  • Appearance: The mark features vertical red and white stripes.
  • Shape: It is usually spherical, pillar-shaped, or a spar buoy.
  • Topmark: If equipped, it features a single red sphere at the top.
  • Night Light: At night, it displays a white light. Unlike other marks that designate specific

hazards or channel boundaries, the Safe Water Mark provides peace of mind by signaling that the surrounding area is free of obstacles.

5. Special Marks

A Special Mark is designed to indicate a specific area or feature, as described in the reference material. Unlike other navigational marks, these are not intended to assist in navigation itself, but rather to highlight areas such as fish farms, swimming areas, communication cables, or military exercises..

Key Characteristics:

  • Purpose: These marks designate areas with a specific, non-navigational purpose, such as fish farms, swimming areas, submarine cables, or military exercise zones.
  • Appearance: They are universally recognized by their yellow color.
  • Shape: They can be of any shape (pillar, spar, or buoy), provided that they do not conflict with the shape of navigational marks.
  • Topmark: If a topmark is fitted, it is always a single yellow 'X' (St. Andrew’s Cross).
  • Night Light: If lit, they display a yellow light, which can have any rhythm that does not conflict with the flashing patterns used by white lights on other navigational marks (e.g., it will not use the 2, 3, or 9 flash patterns used by Cardinal marks).

By observing these yellow marks, a skipper knows that the area has a special designation and should exercise caution or avoid the area depending on the specific activity occurring there.
